Soshoku(Decoration)
Mentori(Faceting) Facets by trimming with a wire or knife when leather hard.
Tataki ita(Paddling) Carved wooden paddles may be used to beat a thrown or coiled pieace to change or consolidate.
Nawame(Cord impressed) Textures are made by rolling cords across the surface of the soft clay.
Kokuin rora(Roller Stamps) Textures are made by roller with patterns.
Kushime(Combing)The surface of the clay is combed to make patterns.
Haritsuke(Sprigging)Clay is pressed into a small mould that is used as a stamp to stick motifs to the slip covered surface of the leather hard piece.
Sujibari(Modelled coils) Coils or pieces of clay are attached to the surface of the leather hard pot. These are then modelled or patterned using bamboo tools.
Uchikomi(Carved moulds) A pattern is carved with metal tools on the surface of a drape or press mould. When a slab of clay is pressed over or into the mould,The pattern becomes impressed in relief on the outer or inner surface of the piece.
Choka(Carving) Leather hard ware is carved with a wooden knife, bamboo tool,or metal carving tools.
Nunome(Cloth Texturing) Cloth may be used to impress a texture into the soft clay.
Neriage/Nerikomi(Clay marbling and mosaic) 1.Different colored clays may be lightly wedged togather to give a marbled effect.
2.The clays may be combined in layers;slicing, rearranging, pressing together, and slicing until slabs of the desired pattern are achieved.
3.Pots can be formed by pressing piece of different colored clay into a mould, like a mosaic.
Hakeme(Brushmark) Slip is painted on a clay body with a brush.
Kakiotoshi(Kakiotoshi) Slip is poured over a leather hard contrasting body and allowed to dry. The pattern is then marked out using a tool with a rounded point, finally the slip is scraped away with a sharp metal tool to reveal the surface beneath.
Mishima(Mishima)Pots are stamped with a pattern while soft and covered with a slip wash of contrasting color. The slip fills the stamped area and, when slightly drier, may be scraped or wiped off from the surface of the pot.
Zogan(Inlay) A pattern is carved into the leather hard clay using a bamboo or metal tool. Soft clay of a contrasting color is impressed into the carved areas and allowed to dry for about a day, then the piece is scraped until the inlay clay is flush with the surface.
Ronuki(Waxresist) A pattern is painted in wax on the surface of a leather hard piece. Slip is then applied over the surface and does not adhere to the waxed parts. The wax burns away during biscuit firing.
Suminagashi(Marbling) A coat of slip is applied to the leather hard ware and a few blobs of slip of contrasting color are dropped from a brush onto the surface. The two colors are swirled together by moving the piece through different angles, and a marbled pattern is formed.
Yubigaki(Finger wipes) Pots are coated with slip, and pattens are made by wiping off ares with the fingers.
Katagami(Stencils) Stencils, cut out from paper or thin card are dampened and pressed against the surface of the pot, which is then dipped into slip or brushed or dabbed with slip. The stencil is then removed to give a positive or negative pattern.
Nagashigake(Dripping) Slip can be dripped from a bamboo trailing tube, ladle,or brush over leather hard ware. This method is also often used for glazing
Hitashigake(Dipping)Leather hard ware may be dipped into slip of contrasting color.
Kasuri mon(Chatter decoration) A coat of slip is applied to leather hard ware. The pot is then rotated on a wheel while a flexible metal tool is held against the surface so that it jumps, cutting nicks in the coat of slip and producing a characteristic pattern.
